Operations

The spreadsheet became a platform.

A multi-vendor commerce marketplace · Marketplace platform · in production, actively maintained

Vendors, affiliates and customers each needed their own view of the same system, and commission had to move correctly between them. Off-the-shelf commerce could not model it. Enterprise pricing could not be justified.

Four audiences, one set of numbers

Customers buy. Vendors list and get paid. Affiliates refer and earn. Administrators need to see all of it and correct it when it goes wrong. Each needs a different view of the same data, and the money has to reconcile across all four.

Why it could not be bought

Standard commerce platforms model one seller. The moment commission splits, vendor payouts and affiliate attribution enter the picture, you are either paying enterprise licensing for capability you mostly will not use, or you are running it out of a spreadsheet and somebody's memory.

The part that was engineering, not features

Vendors with over a thousand products were timing out. Catalogue loads came back fifteen times faster after the pagination and query work, which is the difference between a platform people use and one they work around.

Why an agency could not have done this

None of the above is a website. If a referral, commission or dealer process in your business currently lives in a spreadsheet, this is the shape of the thing that replaces it, and the reason it has not been replaced already is usually that nobody in the room could build it.
