Law Firm SEO

Ranking is not the win condition.

Signed files are. Most legal SEO is sold on rankings because rankings are easy to screenshot, and because the agency has no visibility into what happened after the phone rang.

Two lines every firm is shown only one of.

The monthly report plots the first one. The second is the reason you hired anybody.

Most of the gap between those two lines happens here, at the hour the ranking finally paid off.

Three different searches wearing one name.

Law firm SEO is sold as one service. It is three surfaces with different mechanics, and most firms need one of them far more than the other two. Knowing which is most of the value of the first conversation.

Firms with more than one practice area

Organic pages

Practice area pages that answer the question someone actually typed, with the jurisdiction named. This is the slow compounding half and the half that survives an ad budget being cut.

Three months where I would say no.

Legal SEO has a long payback. Selling it to a firm that needs something else this quarter is how agencies get fired in month five.

  • You need files this month. SEO is the wrong instrument, run ads.
  • Nobody answers the phone after five. Fix intake first, or you are buying calls you will lose.
  • You cannot name the practice area you want more of. Rankings will not choose for you.

If the second one is you, start with intake instead. Ranking better for calls nobody picks up makes the problem more expensive, not less.

What firms ask before signing anything.

For some practice areas it is the single best channel, and for others it is close to useless. It works where people search before they choose, which is most of personal injury, family, employment and immigration. It works badly where the referral comes from another professional, which is much of corporate and commercial. The honest first question is not how to rank but whether your clients arrive by searching at all.
